What is the best and safest way to give away my dog?

My dad says I have to give my dog away before we move after all the damage he did to the house we're currently in.

What is the best and safest way to give away my dog? I know you can give dogs to no-kill shelters that will find a home for him, and I could probably even give him to a pet store. But I'd much rather meet the person I give him to, check them out to make sure they're safe, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses so I can ask them how he's doing every once in a while.

I was thinking about talking to people I know, putting up posters, and posting adds on craiglist. What's the best way to screen and find a good owner for my pet? Also, are there any businesses that will help me do this, or will I have to do it on my own?
