Contact local shelters. They may have free (or at least cheap) spay/neuter clinics.

Okay - if I can answer all your questions on neutering here. For starters, don't be sucked into the thinking that you absolutely must have your dog neutered. I know there is a huge lobby around here (and elsewhere) to get every dog castrated, and every b itch spayed. However, it's far from true that every male dog is a raving sex maniac, constantly thinking about escaping and mating the first available b itch. If you are keeping your dog properly, and that means adequate fencing etc. - and training/exercise - there really is no need to be rushing out and getting him castrated. I believe in waiting until they are at least a year old in any case. That way you can see what his temperament is, as he goes into adulthood, for starters. Castration doesn't suit every dog - if you have a calm boy, one who isn't unduly aggressive, for example, castration could well make him very 'soft'. I've had to have males castrated, in later life, after prostate flare-ups and have regretted having to have it done every time. They just lost their 'fire'. They also ran to fat easily, and their coats altered (heavier). Yes, neutered males don't develop male-related cancers, but this isn't a given, that they will, in any case.

The bottom line is if you look after your male properly, there is no immediate necessity to get him castrated.

My thinking is different with bitches btw. In their case, there are any number of reasons for having them spayed - not having to confine them twice a year for starters. And spayed bitches don't run the risk of picking up a uterine infection, or later life female-type cancers (again though, that's only a risk, not a certainty). I always have my bitches spayed, some later than others, if they are part of my breeding programme.

Finally, there is a lot of information as to the pros and cons of neutering both sexes on the Internet. Check it out, and make up your own mind about this!

If you are in the UK, the PDSA will help with the cost, provided you are receiving Benefits. I would have thought your parents would have helped out with the costs, if you do decide to go ahead, however.
