I agree 100% with nattiej1976. I have two female Akitas and my oldest Akita is such a sweet girl so loving. My youngest is a great dog, very stubborn.

Very good info already, would like to add this video from youtube that will help you get familiar with the differences between the Japanese and American, as there are a huge number of American mistakenly called Japanese and it can be very confusing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGln3ajJjao The two breeds have different temperaments and this must be considered when buying a pup. The true Japanese are much more gregarious and people loving. They are not as good gaurd dogs and are not typically wary of strangers unlike the American Akita. They are also not as stubborn although they do still require a strong leader. They tend to be much easier to get along with other dogs than the American Akita. I consider them easier to train and more responsive, but I have to say I have found mine to be less loyal than the Americans! |

The Akita comes in two prefered breed standards hence the two diffrent names you are referring too. Essentially the American Akita or Great Japanese Dog and the Japnese Akita or Akita Inu, are both Akitas, and share genology and ancestors. However, both America and Japan did not want to compromise or conform to one another on the prefered standards of the breed, hence this sepearation of the two.
The American Akita, generally stands taller and is of slightly stockier build, the american standards allow for a larger colour variety with or without the black mask. The Japanese standard is less flexible when it comes to colour and generally preferres the red, red pinto and white, usually without the mask. We have a 2YO Akita, who would be classed under the American Standards of the breed. Very adorable puppys, but they are alot of dog, and not for the faint at heart. Very protective of their home and family, the Akita may not always be tolerant of intruders into their home, and can take some time to warm up to strangers. Intense training a must, Akitas can be stuborn and willfull and dominant, and it is important that their training is consistent and continued throughout their whole life. If you were to consider getting one, I would encourage you to use the best breeder that you can find, you really want to target pups that have come from very temprementally and physically sound parents. Socialisation from a young age very important. An Akita is capable of ferocity with other dogs, particuarly of the same sex, their very dog dominant nature requires early, proper and regular socialisation to give you a fighting chance in teaching manners and tolerance with other dogs. Very protective of family and home, an Akita can be quite content as an only dog, and content in a small home or appartment if they are part of the everyday goings on of their family. For a big dog, we have been surprised at how inactive they are in the house, and how carefully they move around things not to knock them over. Once you have established a clear boundary of human dominance and gain an Akitas trust, they are the most faithfull and adoring companion you could have. They have only eyes for their family and close friends, and seem to feel deeply an attachment to this unit. |
