i was looking into a few shelters in my area that had dogs up for adoption i go in and see the dogs fell in love with one...and they are asking 500$ for a 8 month old 35lb border collie who is altered.
i understand that they have to make money but 500$? is that normal? the dogs in that shelter are 300$+ i could go out and by a well bred purebred for that much... is it normal to charge that much at shelters? i guess the last time i got a dog from a shelter was 8 years ago picked it up for 50$... oh wow i did't know someone else asked this yesterday oops. i think it's a little ridiculous 700$ for a few hundred more i could pick up a field trained lab... i guess they will continue charging that much until no one buys their dogs.. i just could NOT believe dogs would actually be that expensive.. |

Pounds & "shelters" SELL animals! They'll charge whatever amount they can get.
*I* will never buy a pound-hound. |

They only want serious adopters....the shelters around here charge $100 for adults and $350 for puppies, $50 for cats and $150 for kittens...it's reasonable, I think. If you really love that dog and think it's worth it and can afford to spend $500 on him and then all the vet bills and food and obedience, then go for it. Border collies also need to be groomed a bit in the summer months, so be prepared

I've seen this kind of thing in my local shelter. Right now there's a 3 month old dobe with docked tail and natural ears, he's a beautiful red colour and they're asking $450 for him. This is a shelter that generally charges between $200-$350 for an adoption fee on petfinder. I feel like when they *know* that a dog will be snatched up by a new owner quickly, they see some reason to elevate the price.
I know it's a shelter and does so much good by saving animals, I'm just saying there's no other valid reason why this shoud be done if the dogs all receive the same care. |

Some shelters do ask for such a high donation if they are a smaller organization, a no kill shelter, or a breed rescue (which typically have higher prices). If the dog is a pure border collie then I wouldn't be surprised why they are asking for that much. I have a St. bernard rescue in the area that charge the exact same amount. It could be just that they are looking for serious adopters and good homes for these animals.

they charge that much one, because they want to make sure they have serious inquiries only and two because the dogs have been neutered, vaccinated, microchiped, and heartworm tested.

500?! Are you kidding me? The shelters in my area are 100-150 tops. It probably was a small private shelter that needed to charge more for make up for expenses..but still 500?!
