There are many possible reasons - stress/obsession, fleas, other pests, other illness, food allergies.....
A vet should be able to help you narrow it down.
In the meantime, have you added anything new to the house? I doubt a new couch would stress him out to that extent, but cats are creatures of habit so you never know. I'm talking about things like new cat, new dog, new house....
Have you changed his food? Has the food formula changed?
It is getting toward flea season so that's a possibility. You'd likely find clumps of hair around the house and you'd see him suddenly attacking - biting and licking a specific spot.
It could be flea allergies or food allergies. I would have him checked by a veterinarian.
