Congrats on your new puppy!

First of all, before you bring your puppy home, make sure that you have puppy proofed your house. You need to make sure that your puppy can’t get to any electrical cords, electrical sockets, human medications, sharp pointy objects, (like for example a sharp edge on a desk) trash cans and toxic cleaning liquids and supplies. If you have a trash can that doesn’t have a lid, you need to get one or your Maltese puppy will knock it over and try to eat anything in it.

You should get a wire crate for your puppy. Wire crates aren’t fashionable, but the closed in crates (the Kennel crates that aren’t made of wire) are used for traveling. You will have to get a small sized crate and a medium sized crate for your puppy to grow into. You want to get a crate that is big enough for you puppy to stand and turn around in completely, but small enough so that she doesn’t have accidents. To make the wire crate more comfortable for your puppy, get a plush Cratewear set. These sets come in Light Blue, Pink, or Chocolate Brown. You can get them online at Petsmart. I wouldn’t recommend that you use the nice plush padding that goes inside the bottom of the crate, right away. Your puppy needs to be house trained first! I don’t think you want your puppy to have an accident on that nice padding! You can use the plush outer covering on the crate though.

Get a couple of different varieties of toys. Get a rope toy, a stuffed toy with squeakers (Puppies love squeakers!) a couple of tennis balls, a Kong, and a Chilly Bone. Chilly Bones are really great toy for puppies because since you freeze them, it helps puppies get some relieve when their mouths hurt from teething. Always supervise your puppy with any toy. Puppies tend to want to destroy the toy to get the squeaker, which they can choke on if you don't supervise them! You can find all of these toys online or in store at Petsmart.

Don’t get a bed for your puppy yet. Wait until she is an adult. To a puppy, a bed looks like a giant plush chew toy! Believe me, if you get a bed, it won’t last long!

Any water bowl or food dish is fine. Just make sure you have water out at all times for your Maltese. My dog has the Top Paw Basic Pet Bowl from Petsmart and my mom’s dog has a stainless steel bowl (I don’t remember where we got it) and both bowls have lasted for years!

I would suggest a buckle collar and a leather leash. Why leather? Well, you can never get a good grip on nylon leashes and you can get bad skin burns if the leash slips through your fingers (which it often does). You can get a collar and a leash at Petsmart. Never use Shock/Electronic collars for any reason!!

Some plain rawhide bones are good to have around to occasionally give your puppy.

I hope I helped!
