I've always had pets and i dont think i could last four to eight years without one. I've been thinking about a sugar glider or ferret but I'm not sure what's best or what regulations there might be for a dorm room. Any suggestions?

Gliders R Awesome!

You DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT want a sugar glider.

This is why. Sugar gliders ARE:

LOUD
MESSY
EPENSIVE TO **PROPERLY** CARE FOR
TAKE UP A LOT OF ROOM **IF PROPERLY CARED FOR**
NEED A LOT OF ATTENTION AND TIME
NEED ANOTHER SUGAR GLIDER COMPANION
NEED FOOD THAT NEEDS TO BE BLENDED/MIXED/FROZEN/

They will throw their food into your walls, it will stick to the walls, floor, etc. There will be a mess 4 ft around the cage. They will jump all over the cage and there will be poo and pee flung with them.

They are nocturnal and are VERY noisy. They sound like DOGS/PUPPIES and they BARK very loud. I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment and could hear them from the other room at night. It will keep you up, your room mate, and the next door rooms.

They are also probably NOT permitted on campus/in dorms.

Usually all you are allowed is a 10 gallon tank or less with non aggressive fish. You will be able to find this information right on the website for the school or go to housing.

Do not get a sugar glider.

If you're allowed any of these, get:
bearded dragon
Fish
Snake (ball python, corn snake)
Uromastyx
anole
Leopard gecko (other geckos)

ALSO, don't get a ferret. They will smell up your dorm so fast you'll get thrown out! they too need lots of care/attention

how about a chinchilla they live 15-20 years long and love to be cuddled and have very soft fur.

Well, you'd have to check with your college. I'm pretty sure each dorm advisor has a different rule about pets.

Depending on what you're comfortable with, and what you're allowed to have, I would go with a reptile. Particularly snakes are good for keeping in close quarters since they do not require being taken out.

Obviously, I wouldn't go with a large snake, but corn snakes are very good since they are good-natured and don't get too big. They eat about once a week and need about a 20 gallon tank, which would be perfect for a dorm.

Good luck!

Ferrets require too much time for a student, and don't forget the musk smell, not comparable with a roommate. Try fish(s), or maybe reptile. Try starting out with out one until you find out how much time you can dedicate to something that is dependent on you for food and companionship if needed.

Betta fish.
Easy to take care of, and don't take up much space.
All you need is a tank, water, and the fish. No filter required.

I understand where you are coming from, I would say a fish but you are probably like me and want something you can hold, so I say you should probably get a hamster or something that won't take up too much room. For example, a ferret needs a lot of room and does not like living in a little cage, same as a sugar glider. A hamster can stay in a cage, you can take it out and hold it they only drawback is that they smell and you would have to clean the cage a lot also you might need to wait because your dorm might not allow any animals at all.

Hope I can help!!!!

Maybe a gerbil/hamster? If you're staying at your own house most of the time get an outside cat, that way it'll just need feeding and will probably come in when you're home (:
