Would a standard poodle be ok? Obviously we will need to spend time around one to be sure, but we want a medium to large size breed.

And if anyone has any experience with poodles:
Are they smart and easy to train?
Can you keep them mostly shaved (we don't really like the "poodle cuts"?
Are they good with small animals if raised from a young age?

Thanks in advance ;D
Of course he wants a dog, and we are thinking of a poodle because they shed less than most breeds.
We want a MEDIUM to LARGE size breed. Not a yorkie.

What does your boyfriend have to say about getting a dog?

Look for any that is a short hair and honestly, the best thing for you to do would be to go to your shelter and find a mix of some sort. Sure, it's not a purebred (or puppy mill) dog, but they are generally easier to train then many breeds out there and have a better temper/attitude.

Plus, then you'd be saving a dog from the possibility of being put down.

if u want a smaller dog get a bichon frise, as they have hypo allergenic coat.. poodles have minimal shedding from there coat and can be somewhat considerd hypo allergenic but not totally allergin free... also alot of ppl dont realise when they are allergic to dogs it is not the fur it is the saliva. so keep that in mind.

poodles are a smart breed and ifu start from a young age they can be easy to train. of course you dont have to keep the traditional poodle cut..trust me thats way too much effort if your not planning to show him/her. hopefully this has helped you.. byeee good luck in dog searching
