I walk my little 10 lb dog everyday. Recently, while driving home or leaving home, I've noticed my neighbor's hound mix and two different pit bulls roaming around. What can I do to protect my dog if we're approached during a walk? I don't want to have to sacrifice our walks for someone else's neglect. I'm to any suggestions. Should I just take my pup to the park? I'm not sure how often I could get her to the park, since it's not as convenient as our neighborhood.

I have called the police before but they never showed up. We also have a home owner's assoc. Should I contact them?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I had a similar question a little while ago. If you search for the following question you can see all the answers I got (see below).

My How to keep dogs safe on walks?

I got some really good suggestions. Luckily I only have 2 small dogs and a big back yard so mostly I play with them in the backyard after work. They run around like crazy chasing the ball etc.

On the weekend I go for a 2 hour walk with them at a park where all dogs must be on leads and I feel really safe there. My dogs also have the opportunity to meet other dogs.

Maybe there is something like this in your area.

I would never take them to a dog park as I just don't trust other dogs and they have no way of protecting themselves if a nasty dog comes along.

I bought a device called a Dazer from Amazon. It emits a high frequency signal that dogs hate and I take that on every walk. Other than that, I have a short umbrella that I might take. Dogs are scared when you an umbrella in their faces and an umbrella can be something that you put between your dog and another one. If you have a big umbrella then even better because you can use it to hit a dog that might want to attack, which you have every right to do by the way.

You definately need to talk to the owners and do everything you can to get those dogs contained so call the authorities if you don't have any luck with the owners.

Hope you get some good answers and best of luck.
