View Full Version : rescue centre dogs health problems?
i am planning to rescue a dog in the near future and was wondering are they more likely to have future health problems such as hip dysplacia etc. because they might not have been bred well? will the rescue centre know these things or in later life will we realise?
thanks x

All dogs can be prone to health issues - just a less likely chance if well bred.
Don't let that stop you from getting a great companion from the rescue center. You can have many great years with a rescue dog.

Badly bred doesn't necessarily mean bad dog, if all you are after is a pet.
A good rescue will assess the dogs in their care for health and temperament before being put up for rehoming, so you're unlikely to get any nasty surprises.

Any dog can have health problems but if you are getting a dog from rescue, chances are it won't be a puppy and problems like hip dysplasia will show up better in an older dog.
By definition, dogs in rescue are not well bred - responsible breeders always take back their dogs and do their best to make sure they don't end up in rescue.
No-one can guarantee that any dog will be healthy all its life - anymore than they can guarantee that a child won't have health problems as an adult.

Rescue dogs are no more prone to health problems in later life that ones you get from a breeder. You can never say what health problems that you could face in furture that is why good pet insurance is so important.

all sorts of dogs end up in rescues, for all sorts of reasons
responsible breeders may well always take back dogs they've bred, but that doesn't stop dogs they've bred ending up at rescues - they'd need to be asked to take them back for starters
I'd say you'd be slightly less likely to have those sorts of problems after getting a rescue dog - firstly because a lot of rescue dogs are mixed breeds, so less likely to have breed specific health problems and secondly because they're more likely to be adults health issues would be apparent already and you'd be made aware of them by the rescue centre
