One of our neighbors just got a little beagle a few weeks ago. That's actually how we met them-- our dog wanted to play with theirs. They mentioned to us that they just "rescued" her. I assumed they meant she was from a shelter of some kind. Well, yesterday I was walking my dog (chocolate lab mix) and the owner waited until AFTER our dogs licked all over each other to inform me that their dog has tape worms. Yay. I asked if they'd taken their dog to the vet (she looks really thin & bony, but I assumed she was just skinny from being in the shelter). They told me they FOUND her over a month ago & have no plans to take her to the vet until 2012 when they have to in order to move back to Canada!!! I felt completely bewildered b/c a.) they're morons and b.) Well... they're morons. I told her they need to have their dog checked out by a vet to be wormed and vaccinated. They told me they bought some over the counter stuff from Walmart and when that didn't work they bought some from Petsmart. They said now their dog has blood in her poop. I was getting mad that she's not taking care of her dog and even more angry that she lets it play with every other dog in the neighborhood. So I explained the health risks-- intestinal parasites, heart worms, rabies, Parvo, etc. She didn't care. She said they can barely make their rent as it is and that they can't afford a $40 vet visit. On top of all this, their dog may be someone else's pet that they've lost & I think she's pregnant... They've had her 3 weeks and every time I see her, her nipples are bigger & hang lower.
My dog is on a monthly heart worm preventative pill that also wipes out intestinal parasites. She's also on K9-Advantix. So I'm not entirely worried about her. But what about their dog? How can I convince this woman that their dog really, really needs to see a vet?
And we live in a townhome neighborhood. We own & they rent, so they've never been to the HOA meetings, but they allow their dog to crap in other peoples' yards w/o picking it up. And she told me herself that the dog passes live, moving tapeworms from time to time. It's disgusting.
KoAussie: I believe my Q was "How do I convince them to see a vet?".... Being patient isn't going to make their dog any healthier. And I'm not looking to make friends with someone who obviously disregards health standards.
