Do not purchase a female until you have a complete understanding of what betta breeding entails. Give yourself the best chance of success and take the time to thoroughly research.

You have to properly condition the pair. Both the male and the female have to be ready to breed or you can end up with seriously wounded bettas. To condition my bettas I fed them frozen bloodworms/brine shrimp and kept the female contained within the males tank using a hurricane lamp.

Spawning should be supervised. Once both the male and female show signs that they are ready to spawn, you lift out the lamp and release the female. Keep the tank bare-bottomed so that after each embrace the male can quickly locate the eggs and place them in his nest. It is important to remove the female once spawning is complete as the male will become territorial of his nest.

Within 24 hours, if the spawn was successful, you should be able to see the tails of the fry using a flashlight. You can potentially end up with 100-500 betta fry. *You should know what you will do with all that survive before you spawn.* You should have live foods cultured and ready for the fry at this point. You can order microworms at very cheap prices off the internet.
Also, the 5-10 gallon used for spawning will not do for all of the fry. You should have a much larger aquarium ready for grow-out.

Don't forget that all tanks should be filtered, heated, and cycled. Cycling information- http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/misc/fishlesscycling.html
