Could any Boxer dog owners help me out with this one. I have a 7 year old male white boxer who has suddenly contracted a skin complaint or at least I think it's a skin complaint.
The complaint is a redness to his skin on his hind quarters only and it is not spreading. He is bathed on a regular basis using a medicated shampoo for dogs. This helps for about a week as the redness fades and his white coat returns. However after that his coat becomes red again. He doesn't scratch but he does have a tendency to nibble at the affected areas.
Before someone says take him to a vet I have already thought of that. I just wondered if anyone had any good ideas for a home made remedy that might help before resorting to what may become an expensive action.
While I'm because of the shape of his head he has a problem with sores under the eyes due to the run off from his eyes at either side of the top of his nose. I bathe these areas frequently but they still look sore. I thought about putting vaseline on to these areas to allow any run off from his eyes to run away from these areas any thoughts on that.
Cheeky I know trying to get 2 answers for the price of one but if you don't ask you don't get.
His skin complaint is not the result of burning. As he is white he even goes out in the sun with a cover on him.

Hi I have a white boxer too...Did he get burned???
Vasaline is a good idea. alot of breeders do it. You do really need to take him to your vet for his skin. It could be anything from fleas to an allergic reaction or parasites that burry under the skin. All treatable with being properly diagnosed. A home made remedy could make him worse as a lot of boxers have very sensitive skin.

I had similar problems with my dog, he has been on four different sorts of tablets over the past 2 years or so, they all worked for a while and then stopped. The last vet I took him too said he should have blod tests but that he needed to be off the steroids he was on for at least 3 months before they could be done. She gave me Antibiotics for him that he could stay on until the blood tests were done. He was supposed to have 2 a day but I found I was forgetting to give him the second one. He seemed fine so I decided to give it a try stopping the other tablet too. I did and all is fine, in fact his coat hasnt looked as good in a long time. The only thing I can put it down too is that I changed his food to JAMES WELLBELOVED. It is a hypoallergenic food and he loves it. I would recommend you try it.
I to have a white boxer boy and it sounds like your baby just got some sunburn which isnt to rare here is what I would suggest doin. Try giving him a bath in cool water. Mix the bath with an Oatmeal product to help ease the pain and itching associated with the sunburn. Wipe the burned areas off with witchhazel after his cool bath. (Witchhazel is a strong antioxidant and astringent made from the leaves and bark of the witchhazel plant) then Apply a 100% Aloe Vera gel to the sunbun. A product made from Pure Aloe Vera is very safe and non-toxic. If there are any sores try applying a gentel antibiotic ointment to it and keep re applying the Aloe Vera til the burn is fully healed. I also get a squirt bottle and fill it with cold water, adjust it to a Misty spray and just randomly spray him coast lightly it will be very soothing for him you can also take an old T-shirt soak it in cold water and set it on his back. Most sunburns wont require a trip to the vet unless he is clearly in a lot of pain I would suggest taking him. Also to help prevent him from gettin sun burned in the future I use SPF 15 or higher when hes playing outside for long periods of time just apply it to the tips of the ears, bridge of the nose, groin area, inside of the legs and the underbelly. Be sure the sunscreen does not contain PABA which is dangerous to dogs if ingested and most dogs will try to lick sunscreen off. There are several sunscreens available that are made specifically for canines but make sure it doesnt contain PABA best of luck to you and your boy please email me with any questions at all
i have always had boxers I've got a white one and brindle one boxers are known to suffer with skin problems i rub a bit of baby oil on dry skin.

My mom's boxer had skin problems and one of the things she ended up doing was giving him oatmeal bathes. I would definitely try that as it helped my mom's boxer and another dog she owned who had skin allergies. Fill your tub up with warm water and add a bunch of oatmeal and have your dog soak in it, rub it over his hind quarters, oatmeal is very soothing for the skin. Another problem could be that he has some sort of allergy, a common allergy for dogs are food allergies. I would try to find a dog health food/organic food store and see if they have food that helps with allergies. Make sure there is no corn in it, corn is bad for dogs and is usually something they're allergic too. However if you try all of these things and nothing changes, please take him to the vet before his skin can get infected from chewing on it.
