Is this a good method of training a cat for bad behaivor?

I just got a kitten...and he likes to chew on electrical wires...scratch the sofa, and climb on the kitchen counters. I do not spank him because I think that could make an aggressive cat out of him but I have been spraying him with a water bottle. It seems to work. Do you think that is bad to do that?
He has all kinds of toys...I bought him a ton of them..but he still does bad things.
