I have a 2 year old long haired, ginger, neutered tom cat, brought from a rescue centre. He is fantastic in every way but just hates being groomed, to the point he will sulk and disappear for a day or two. Any advice on how to prevent matting of his fur would be gratefully received by me and him.

I would suggest grooming him while he's eating. I do this with my long-haired cat and she was wary of grooming at first, but now she really likes it. Food is positive for cats, so if you sit down beside him calmly and brush him (gently at first) it will make it more of a positive experience!
