Try looking in your local paper first but if you go to someones house, take care. Ask to see the parents (of the kitten!).
Rescue centres are brilliant and are bound to have loads of kittens at this time of year. I've just got two and the staff were SO helpful and really friendly. I was asked to make a donation to the centre which was fine.

i know there's websites online that have free stuff that people post. if you search for one of these you can probably go on there and find something like that in your area

PLEASE PLEASE CHECK OUT THE SHELTER!!!!
I just adopted a cat from the shelter (they are so over crowded and all those cats desperately need homes!).
We just lost our loving kitty (of 10 yrs.) to cancer.
I decided to purchase a siamese kitten ($450).
But before doing so I thought I'd check out the animal shelter since that is where we got our last cat.
I decided that I'd let the cat pick me out. lol!
I walked into the cattery and quietly took a look around.
I did not approach any of them right away.
I watched as they curiously looked at me.
One cat in particular checked me out head to toe, meowing the entire time.
As I walked around he followed me (with his eyes) meowing constantly.
When I got to his cage he rubbed his body against the cage bars, meowed, flopped down and began purring.
He won me over.
I did not adopt him right then (I didn't want to make a hasty decision).
The next day I went back to the animal shelter and once again that cat won me over. I adopted him.
He is 2-3 years old, litter box trained and a perfect match for our family.
Needless to say I did not buy the siamese kitty ($450).
I paid a much smaller fee for my new kitty cat!
He is already neutered, has had his feline vaccination and rabies shot. He was also tested for feline leukemia (neg) and even had a micro chip in place. I did pay an additional fee ($10) for his leukemia vaccination.
He's still getting use to us and our home (he's been with us for 4 days)...and adjusting quite well. I am so glad I adopted him, saving him from euthanasia!
The shelter is a great place to find a kitty! =^..^=
