My cat is two yeas old and has begun over grooming his rear. He did it a bit to his front paws also but has stopped. There are only a few bald spots, with a little scabbing. Otherwise he is as happy as can be. There haven't been any changes in his environment or behavior to contribute to this new habit. Does your cat do this?
The cone around his neck is the fastest solution but when I used the same method on another cat, she became traumatized by the cone. She hated walking with it on. Now she refuses to walk on the ground, she navigates on all the high shelves we have outside. He is an outside/inside cat and the other cats are mean to the cat with the cone, they tried to pick her off because they think she is weak or sick.
