i really wanted to get a pair of pet rats but my dad is scared to death of them lol ive tried really hard to make him see there is nothing to be afraid of.....hes held them before ive done tons of research and he still doesnt like them he didnt seem to scared about the little mice so i want to get a pair of female fancy mice i know they are not the same thing but pretty close and they are really cute too! if i do get mice i think i might get the same cage i have for my gerbils it comes with a water bottle food dish a wheel, it has 2 levels. and a bunch of tubes for it to crawl in it has a plastic bottom and the rest is wire (except for the top that is plastic too) is this a good cage (i am also going to get things to chew on and bedding is aspen ok?) is this all i need for them (and of course im gonna provide food) i also have an exercise ball.

I haven't heard anything spectacular about them, but i do know that rats make great pets. They are really smart and fun. Rats have just had a bad reputation which turns people off, but those rumors about rats are not true. Well, hope this helps!

I dont think you would like mice, they jump like crazy and bite. I would think your Dad would be more afraid of those little things. I have a rat and he is the sweetest thing. What about getting a Chinchilla or a dwarf bunny? There both cute and fuzzy.

There is a big difference between mice and rats. They are different species of rodents. (below I've given the address of a quiz on telling the difference). Rats are bigger than mice, eat more, and create more waste. As long as you take care of it, your father shouldn't notice any difference with having a rat or having a hamster or guinea pig. I have had a pet rat. She was white with black patches. Real pretty rat. Maybe if your father saw the colored varieties he would see them more as a pet.
Another good pet is a Guinea Pig. They are very sensitive and can easily catch colds, unlike a rat which is hardy and strong. They are bigger than Gerbils.(Which you have had) Hamsters are more like rats, but can bite you when aggravated or frightened, and their teeth are very sharp. All rodents can really hurt you if you are cruel or rough with them. An exercise ball? Maybe that is what has your father worried. We kept our rat in a large cage, and seldom took it out. Rats and mice, when they escape, can make their home in the walls, of your house, and even in your couch which pose a health problem. If you get a rat, you need to get a metal cage. A rat can chew through plastic cages in one night. I think hamsters are the best pets of the small rodents. They are clean, their waste is dry, and they are fastideous home keepers. They will take a rag or newspaper, and chew it up into fluffy material for their beds. Never keep two females together because they will fight to the death. If you keep a male and a female you will soon have a litter of little baby hamsters too. Hamsters are fun to feed, they take sunflower seeds and nuts and stuff their cheek pouches with the food, and look real cute when you've fed them. Later they will eat what they store in their cheeks. If they escape, they are easier to catch as they are tamer, and slower than mice or rats. I suggest you get hamsters. There are small varietities which resemble mice (dwarf hamster), but they are cleaner and easier to care for. |

I have 2 female mice. One is new and I just got her. But my other mouse is cute, she's entertaining and seems low maintenence, the downside is when I hold her she likes to poop/pee on me.. But other than that, she's great

Mice make good pets, not great but ok. i have one and the only thing i have against mice is that they are very jumpy and fast. They are also escape artists! If your gerbil cage has any holes larger than the size of a dime your mouse could easily sneak out of it. Even when they look big and fluffy you would be amazed to see them squeeze through the smallest holes. Aspen bedding is fine in most cases but some individual mice are allergic. I would suggest Carefresh bedding! When you get chew toys do not get pine or Cedar!!!!!!!!!! Mice do not get used to you immediately and when you first hold them they may jump out of your hands and dissapear!! be careful with them. The excersise ball can be used for all out of cage play time but some people would say they need to be able to be free and run around (i believe thats what they have a cage for!!!) It sounds like you have everything figured out so good luck!
