  My dogs just mated...now what?
So my 2yr old female maltipoo mated with a family members 1yr old male yorkie
We were planning on maybe mating them but the decision was never really discussed at all. and then..well long story short they mated...I'm kinda new to this. There is a probability that she might become pregnant. What can I expect? Any tips?

Spay her. Only grubby backyard breeders whelp mutts from sires that are too young to have any genetic screenings. Just stop now before you even get started.

Congratulations first thing you can probably expect is to be called a backyard breeder because you allowed two pet quality animals to mate and produce mongrels. (I am not intending to denigrate the future pups by name calling that is just what mixed breeds are actually called). I know you say it happened accidentally but you also admit that you were in the planning stages of just such a breeding. Not taking steps to prevent an accidental breeding is akin to intentionally breeding. The end result is going to be the same - more mongrel pups brought into a world where millions are already being euthanized in shelters.

As to what else you can expect if you allow the pregnancy to proceed, there is a lot you need to know including the fact that having a litter of puppies is a risk to the health of the pregnant B**** and to that of the puppies. So the first thing you need to do is start saving some money and get ready for is a quick emergency trip to the vet if it turns out your pregnant B**** has complications during pregnancy. There is also the possibility that she will need a c-section if she should have trouble delivering the pups. (Those run around $2,000 to $3,000).

But you might get lucky and then all it will cost you is the extra food your B**** will need during pregnancy and after delivery. Also count on spending money on all the whelping supplies you will need. (Whelping box, forceps to aid in delivery, syringe to clear puppies breathing passages. possibly a heat lamp to keep them warm and so many other sundries that professional breeders must keep on hand to be ready in any eventuality.)

If you do get a litter of live pups they and the mother will all need to be packed up for a trip to the vet so that the mother can be checked to make sure she does not retain any placenta or need any other medical care. That of course is another expense. The pups will need a wellness check too and at around 5 weeks they will have to have the first of their puppy shots. You do know it is illegal to sell or adopt out pups before at least 8 weeks of age right? Actually small breeds need to be with the mother for around 12 weeks. So all of the puppies expenses will be yours to bear until then.

What I have already mentioned does not of course factor in the possible expense of lost work hours if you have a job outside the home. Nor does it factor in lost sleep. During the later stage of pregnancy someone must be around and often awake through the night for a week or more so that they can monitor and assist with delivery and rush the B**** to the vet if she needs help with a difficult delivery.

If in the sad but certainly possible scenario of your little maltipoo dying during or shortly after delivery, or should she reject the pups as some B*****s do, then the next thing you will need to know is how to care for orphaned pups. It requires feeding each pup every two hours with puppy formula you will have to purchase. You will also have to wipe the puppies with cotton balls to make them defecate as their mother would have done by licking them. That will only go on until you can safely wean them in a few weeks. But maybe that won't happen either and if it does you can always come back and ask questions about that at the time.

OR -- you could do the totally responsible thing and take your poor little female dog to the vet now and have her spayed which would absolve you of all the above responsibilities and expenses. It wouldn't hurt to encourage your family member to neuter their pet yorkie either. Both animals will live longer healthier lives if you do.

how long ago was this? if it was within the last day or two you can choose to give her de-mating shots, but only within the first 2-3 days max.

it probably wouldn't be smart to have your bitch go through birth as small breed dogs are prone to needing c-sections/breeches. she could die during birth.

What do you plan to do with the puppies? do you have possible homes for these pups? it is irresponsible to breed unless you have insured homes. do you know how many dogs have no homes and end up in shelters to die? only about 10 out of 100 get adopted. don't make more unwanted dogs!

what to expect from pregnancy/birth.

gestation is 61 - 65 days (because fertilization can happen quite a few days after breeding (sperm can survive up to 11 days before dying, and that means that she could get fertilized 11 days after breeding).

signs of pregnancy: primarily the best sign is the development of the dogs nipples. this can happen as early as two weeks, but normally happens later. appetite can be affected, she may eat more or less. she may have something close to human "morning sickness". behaviourally she may be more stand-offish or more affectionate.

Verification that your dog is pregnant: ultrasound (can give you a clue about how many, based on heartbeats) is after 25 days of gestation 94- 98% accurate. palpation (can make a guess on how many can be felt) is after 28-34 days 87-88% accurate. X Ray (is by far the most conclusive as you can tell how many puppies there are and how healthy they are, V.S just a Yes or a No on whether she is pregnant) greater then 44 days is 100% accurate. a blood test can also be conducted, but it only tells you whether she is pregnant or not, nothing else.

there are 3 stages of labour: 1 cervical dilation (no pushing yet that is in stage 2): panting, vomiting, restlessness. may last 6-2 hrs. 2 contractions. pups born every 30 - 60 mins. should deliver first puppy within 4 hrs of onset of stage 2. 3 expelling placentas. usually passes 5-15 mins after birth. the bitch may eat them or not, it doesn't matter. green placentas are perfectly normal.

after care: the bitch should have a discharge for the next 3 weeks. normal color is green tinged and a little bloody. should never look like pus. this should go away, never get worse.

any abnormal behaviour after birth is bad (trembling, not eating, lethargy, neglect of pups). go to a vet pronto if she develops any of these signs.

BUT... breeding should only be for dogs that have good bloodlines (and cannot pass on undesirable traits), and are worth something, such as for showing. it could cost you up to 8,000 bucks, or more if she needs a c-section, she could die during birth, etc etc. why would you want to go through all this? get her SPAYED.

You can expect puppies in about 63 days. Millions of dogs are killed every year because owners do not spay and neuter their dogs and we don't have enough homes for the excess. Please fix this so there arer NO more puppies.

Congratulations on becoming another backyard breeder bringing poorly bred mutts into the world. SO many of those types of dogs are PTS every single day because there are just too many and people like you keep bringing more into the world. You have no idea what they could both genetically pass on to the pups so they could end up with all sorts of genetic illnesses later in life. Not to mention you can't garuntee that any of these puppies will have forever homes. So you either go in and get a gravid spay or you should do A LOT of research on dog pregnancy and whelping and get into contact with your vet. Then they should be released at no less than 8 weeks of age (better to keep until 12 for small breeds) and you charge $50 dollars for the cost of first shots and deworming and with a spay/neuter contract, and you use that money to spay your female.

Now what? You get her spayed that's what. Don't just skip my answer, read it and then form a conclusion.

Reasons:
-You are not breeding for any good reason. You "planned"...planned what? Making more mutts? WHY?
-You purposefully mixed breeds.
-YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

DO you have any idea how many females DIE because they have inexperienced owners?

Good breeders do it because they want to improve and benefit their chosen breed. They want to provide quality puppies by only breeding the most healthy examples of their chosen breed. Ones who have proved their quality within the show or working ring and passed many genetic and health tests.
Good breeders provide a quality product, their puppies.

YOU ARE NOT ONE OF THOSE.

You bred two unknown dogs with unknown pedigrees and unknown genes. You can't predict ANYTHING about the litter to provide the potential owners with any good information. You did not research and prepare BEFORE allowing the dogs to mate, so you are going in blind.

Shelters are full of dogs bred by people like you. Bought on impulse and dumped when the cute wore off. Killed before their second birthday because NOBODY WANTS THEM.

Spay the female NOW. Before she becomes pregnant (before the eggs imbed in the lining of the uterus).

And go volunteer some time in a shelter.

I hope you have a few thousand bucks laying around, litters are VERY expensive even when everything goes right. They can be $5,000+ if something goes wrong.
It was insanely irresponsible of you to let this happen. Take her in to be spayed immediately.
