Lab vs Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler)?

I was wondering which would be better for me.

I doubt I'm going to get a dog soon, but eventually I will be an active duty soldier living on a base. my girlfriend and I plan to be married by then and she will obviously live there with me (along with any kids if we have any yet) My fiancee wants to run or work at a daycare, preferably out of our house.

(I don't know if that would be possible on base or not, but lets just say it is)

I've grown up with two different black Labs as pets and absolutely love them, but I know people who have had an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) and it was a great pet and beautiful dog.

I was wondering if base life would fit an Australian Cattle Dog, or if I should wait until I get off base to get one?

Any help would be great!
