Why do dogs have to sniff the ground before they poop? What are they sniffing for?

Dogs Why do dogs have to sniff the ground before they poop? What are they sniffing for?, Maybe it's a stupid question, I dunno. But I'm curious lol. Cause we've got the whole yard and she has to sniff around for 10 minutes before she goes....

They want to scent other dogs and where they marked. Also sometimes it's a way of attracting or tracking down mates for dogs.

You should try to poop in the yard, and see what you do. It's the only way to know for sure :P

When they pee and poop, they're doing two things:

1. relieving themselves.
2. marking their territory.

By peeing on something, they're letting all the other dogs know, "this is mine!" So watch what they pee on to see if they have good taste!

I read a book once where the man took his dog out to "read the pee mail". I tell that to my dog as we walk to 'hunt' a good place to go!

for the BEST possible spot for you to step in it later. lol

actually i think it's just that she's looking for a spot that her scent has faded from. it's a way of marking territory.

she's sniffing to get a scent of other dogs that have previously been in that area.

They're marking their territory. This site might explain it better to you: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/urine-marking/page1.aspx

Their scent. They smell where they have gone, where others have gone and choose where they want to deposit their scent.
