I just adopted a new dog who was diagnosed with Kennel Cough the day we got him (took him straight to the vet, since we have other pets at home and wanted to make sure everythign was ok with him). Since then, he has been on antibiotics for 7 days, along with cough meds. Starting about 24 hours ago, he started hacking, coughing and vomiting up phlegm. We took him to two different vets, one gave him anti-vomiting meds and fluids, the other gave us a stronger antibiotic and stronger cough med. We have since given him 2 doses of both (hydrocodone, and doxycycline), but the coughing and vomiting has persisted.
I called back the vet, and they said to just give him the cough meds every 4-6 hours, but I am just afraid he is coughing them right back up since they haven't had an effect on him yet!
I am really worried about the little guy, but his appetite, energy level, and water consumption has not changed...so I hope that's a good sign. I am just surprised that the vet doesn't want to keep him overnight to make sure he is getting fluids, and give him a cough medicine while being monitored. Anyone have any thoughts on this situation?
