Dog lethargic 4 days after being spayed.?
She seemed to be ok after being spayed this past Monday. However now, Thursday night, she is lethargic, didn't want to eat dinner today and her teats below her incision are very swollen and firm. She hasn't licked her stitches too much. Last couple of nights she has whimpered and last night she was panting as well. She is drinking a little bit of water when offered to her. I am really worried and am wondering if anyone has an suggestions or similar experiences with their dogs. Please help!
Is it ok to give her 1/2 a baby aspirin until I visit the vet at 7am? Or will it impact the vet visit (lead to a misdiagosis)?
Thanks for your responses. Turns out she (as far as the vet could tell) did not have an infection. He said that her site looked normal and undisturbed. He determined that she was suffering from a false pregnancy (lactating caused the teats to swell). I did not add up the clues (nesting, swollen teats, loss of appetite and lethargy) because I had never heard of a spay (stress and dramatic hormone change) causing a false pregnancy to go into overdrive. She got a shot of Vitamin B Complex and Fluids SQ that seemed to give her a little boost. I will monitor her over the weekend and take her back on Monday if symptoms get worse (for a possible hormone injection).

Thanks again for your quick responses.

i would take your dog back to vet and get them to check her over, the swelling could be a number of things, some dogs have reactions to sutures, even a small amount of licking can cause an infection, a little fluid filled sack under the skin lots of different things t could be. but if she is lethargic and not eating i would get her checked.

I'd say take her back asap, or at least ring the vet. She could have a possible infection.

The fact that she's not eating is worrying. Take her back to the vet to find out what's wrong.
