Marley is 2 and a beagle lab mix. She is pretty good in the house, but I want to get her more responsive to coming when called, and stopping what she is doing when told. Also stay would be good. I was wondering if there are any tips for training an older dog, not a puppy. Most stuff I have found assumes that the dog you have is a puppy.
Thanks to everyone here, oh and tankster I didn't slack off on anything I adopted her this way and am trying to get her trained up. Try not to be so self righteous when you respond to people. |

All the above answers are right on target. It gets back to training. One type of training that has been very successful is clicker training.

You have to break her in to the training schedule.
Put her on a reward system. Tell her to do what you want her to do and, if she does it, give her a doggie treat. If she doesn't, repeat the command until she does. Don't give her any treats unless she is following orders. Carry the treats around with you in a plastic seal-able baggie. When you give her a treat for good behavior, tell her what a good dog she is and pet or hug her. Do this daily until she gets the routine down. |

One method is to pick a command such as "Marley, here!" and reinforce it positively without too much repetition to confuse your dog. You can practice by having her sit next to you so she knows that "here" means sitting and staying.
Then you can add some distance which teaches her that "here" means to come to you and sitting and staying. "Marley" can just be a cue, but the important part is "here" which signals that she has to stop and come to you. Always reinforce this with something positive and practice a few times a day until she gets it. |

I would look into obedience training clubs. You can learn so much from there and get a chance to socialize your dog too. What works for puppies will work for any age dog.
Tips for training an older dog would be a lot of praise. Get real excited when the command is obeyed. |

train her as if she is a puppy. you need to start with the basics all over again. think of her as a 8 week old puppy. brand new. since you obviously slacked off in training alreayd, there is no reason to try and keep going the way you already have
