I took my dog for a walk earlier and he had what seemed to be a fit, he was walking funny then fell on the floor kicking his legs, after a couple of seconds he was alright again and was back to himself. He seemed to be confused so i comforted him. When we got home I gave him some water and a love. He's a border collie and is quite old. Is there anything else I should do? I read on one website that maybe rescue remedy may help calm him. I believe this isn't the first time this has happened.

Your dog needs the vet, especially because he's a senior. Older dogs deserve and need better care - complete geriatric check-up at least twice a year. Your dog may have geriatric vestibular disease - please don't fool around with his health any longer and get him to his vet.

I'd not panic unduly although this does sound like a fit of some sort. Was it unduly hot? If he was mine, I'd phone the vet's office and ask to speak to a vet and describe what has happened. Taking him in unnecessarily may well stress him although chances are he'll want to see him, and maybe run some tests. Rescue Remedy is good for relaxing dogs (and humans), but there's probably some underlying situation going on, probably relatively simple, so rather than try home remedies, I think I'd at least speak with my vet and take it from there. Meanwhile just keep him quiet until you can speak with your vet.

It would be much safer to take your dog to the vet for a 100% health check. Since you do not know what the actual cause of his symptoms are, it is not a good idea to self medicate.
Let the vet prescribe something safe, as you cannot be sure that what you give him will be safe for him. |
