I have a 1 year and 2 month old miniature wire-haired Dachshund that I've had since he was a puppy. I moved to a new apartment 2 months ago. Now poor Bernie does not want to sleep through the night in his crate! I crate him during the day starting at 8am while I'm at work. For exercise, he gets walked midday by his dog walker. When I get home around 5pm, I walk him around my neighborhood. He spends the evening hanging out with me or my boyfriend in the apartment, running up and down the stairs and through it. Then, before I sleep usually around 10 pm, I take him out for another walk and put him to sleep in his crate. Sometime in the middle of the night, usually between 2-6 am he wakes up and cries and barks. Bernie will continue to cry and bark for over 4 hours.
I feel like we've tried almost everything. We tried to let him sleep in the bedroom with us, but he gets up and decides it's playtime at 3am. Also, the front of the closet doors are mirrored, so he just loves barking at his reflection at 3am as well. I know some people might say to ignore him. Unfortunately, it's difficult to ignore a Dachshund digging at your head and licking your face.
We've left him in the crate and ignored him as well by wearing earplugs. He still barks consistently, and my neighbors just complained recently to me (they have had guests so are sleeping in their living room and can now hear him).
I've had a (1/2 long haired/1/2 wirehaired Dachshund and a Doberman growing up, and both of them slept through the night without any problems. Bernie's over a year, so I thought he would have gotten used to sleeping in his crate.
I'm pretty sure he has separation anxiety, but not quite sure how to go about 'dealing with it'. His barking is incessant and is starting to erode my relationships with my neighbors and boyfriend, not to mention the lack of sleep.
Has anyone has this problem with their Dachshund?
