What are English Cocker Spaniels like?

We are looking into getting a new dog/pup and I have been researching the English Cocker. I am new to the breed and wonder if someone can answer some questions that don't seem to be covered by the AKC website or other websites I've checked out. I've always had big dogs (Irish Setters, Goldens) but am thinking it might be nice to have something a little smaller and they sound like wonderful dogs. Also, we have two young children who are very gentle with animals.

1) Do they bark a lot? I've always had bigger dogs that have been fairly quiet -- do the English Cockers bark constantly like many of the little or toy breeds? (I'm not talking about when someone comes to the door)

2) Does this breed tend to "piddle" a bit in the house when they get excited?

3) I've read that this breed can be destructive when left alone. I work from home and am around much of the time but there are going to be days when I'm out for a few hours shopping or with the kids. Will I always need to worry?
