Why does my cat randomly start running through the house?

I have a male cat, he's healthy--up to date on all vaccines and is neutered. Randomly he will just run through the house and it gets dangerous, he jumps off my 4-year-old who sometimes will be sleeping on the couch and will also leap at me. He just doesn't seem to care who is already occupying areas and just goes for it. My son has gotten hurt and I've gotten hurt..and being pregnant, having another little one on the way..I'm afraid he will hurt them too. What could be the cause of this? How can I stop it? My boyfriend doesn't want to get rid of him.
To those of you asking if I have ever owned a cat--yes. I have owned them throughout my entire life and this is the first cat that has done this. He has been strictly an indoor cat since birth and has never even shown interest in going outside. I also do not give him cat nip and we've been feeding him the same food for a while and he has never shown a dislike to it.

He isn't our only cat either. He is the ONLY one that has this behavior. There's a difference between getting out energy and doing what he does because they will play together and run around--but NOT to the extent he does when he randomly does this action. It's hard to explain, but it's different.
have you never had a cat before? thats what they do! all cats do this. it probably just board or wants some attention. you shouldn't have a cat if this bothers you. if it's a kitten you can train it to be more calm eventually but if it's grow already your just going to have to deal with it. my cat hopes like a rabbit thur the house and does the matrix of the couch. he hate males and jumps on them when they come thru the door and jumps on my head when i wont wake up to let him out. I think he's pretty entertaining .

This response is no help to me and I find it ridiculous. Just because your cat has that behavior, doesn't mean it's normal for mine. I've had cats for years and this behavior is definitely different than the normal needing to get out a burst of energy. I take very good care of my cats, adopting him when he was a year old from the pound.
