Cats can i take the cat of my 96 sunfire?, i want to take it off to clean it but i have heard that there is a sensor on it and i would have to hook up and OBDII scanner ...

i want to take it off to clean it but i have heard that there is a sensor on it and i would have to hook up and OBDII scanner to it to clear the code when i take it off so the engine will start when i put it back on is this true?

Yes. It will set a code P0420 (catalyst efficiency) and probably oxygen sensor 2 failure code(s). If you have emissions inspection it will fail. If you don't, then I guess you don't have to worry about the codes. You can also get a bypass sensor that will give the vehicle the readings it expects from the oxygen sensor, though I don't recommend it because if you get caught in many areas you can get fined.

if the O2 sensor is before the cat your ok as far as codes
second
if you want a free flow exhaust there are aftermarket companies that make free flowing cats for performance and they have
"CARB" numbers (california smog )
and they are reasonably priced
good luck and lets remember
the cat is there to help clean the air ,its our responsibility as drivers to use and maintain them to keep the air clean
