My cat Hisses at all my visitors, why and how can i train him?
My cat i have had since he was born, the mother cat was a very quiet cat, never hissed or scratched.
Smokey is on his own with me, my partner and my son, we all get on really well with smokey and he is a very loving cat but as soon as i have any friends come round he will start hissing and starring at the visitors.
He has never ever been treated badly, so it cant be that.
I am not sure how to get him to snap out of that, he is nearly now.
Is there anyway i can train him not to be so agressive?
He has had the snip which i thought might have calmed him down, but it didnt.
I dnt want to give him up, can anyone help please.
Thanks

I agree with blah. Just put the cat in another room when you have visitors. My cat sits in the window and when people come to the door she will growl but when they come in she just runs to the back room and stays until they leave. There is no reason for you to have to give him up, some cats just dont like other people like some peoples dogs bark when strangers come over.

treet your cat with respect however show that you are the boss, be strick but don't shout at the cat as it will just agrivate it. also to help a lot spend time with it by strocking it and hugging it lots.
hope this helps

Cats are very independent creatures with personalities to match. Your cat has his reasons for reacting the way he does. Maybe people force themselves on the cat and the cat is not ready for this. Perhaps they approach him talking loud and try to pet him when he is not ready. I would let the cat go to the people. Cats are curious but they approach things, events, objects, people on their own terms. You cannot change their minds if they are not ready.

For other information, I have a bird that is the same way. He hisses and bites at people he does not know, but never has done this with family members. He is a very docile, sweet, loving bird. I think cats and birds are very much alike. haha

Your cat is trying to keep you to themself and protect you. Just try to comfort the cat praising them and telling them that it is ok whilst not making any eye contact. Let them see that the visitor is of no harm to you and they should settle down. x

He just doesn't like people in his world. If he makes people nervous just put him in another room when you have visitors.

It's his personality he loves his family but not strangers.. if you are worried he might hurt your visitors put him in another room while you have company.
My mainecoon cat hated children and would scratch them if he was alone with them. He had to go outside when we had under 5 year old visitors. It's just the way he was.. loved adults hated kids.

my cat 4ys old did the same thing honestly...

bout 2yrs ago he hissed and scratched my very best friend Gemma

and many other friends got hissed by a cat

ur cat doesn't know any of ur friends, all i did if inviting them over for 1-3days a week

if u do tat ur cat will actually understand u want ur visitors to say hello

matter of fact my cat hasnt hissed or scratched my friends for 2 yrs now because of that

so more u do more ur cat knows ur visitors so he/she wont harm

i hope this helps
