| Hello, loving first time cat owner with an obstacle! Recently I've moved to a new home (1 year ago), along with my 2 year old female cat. I've owned her since 6 weeks old, and she is my first ever cat. In my previous home, there have been responsibility issues. I lived with a sibling who also owned a cat of his own they shared litter boxes. My brother has discipline porblems, making him do anything is a challenge. My brother I were taking turns (at least was planned) cleaning the box, the box was large so it only needed cleaning once a day. After a bit my brother refused to clean it, and my father told me to not do his job for him, he needs to learn. My father was never firm, but I didn't fight him on it. My cat, Lila, would start going anywhere in the house when the box filled. I feel this is where the problem is caused... After a year of such behavior, my cat learned to not use box 24/7. Now in my new home, she goes anywhere. She will use the box, but at random she'll go elsewhere... It does not matter of cleanliness, location, or if shared with another cat. Usually 1 out of 3 times she isn't in box. I've tried to undo this, by cleaning up or putting in box then take her to the box show. Even if she hasn't gone yet, I carry her to box show...she refuses and runs away to a corner when I'm not looking. Is there a way to untrain her new poor habit? Will it cost anything? I prefer cheap if not free correction methods, thank you. |

| You may want to try a variety of methods to encourage proper behavior and discourage bad. For starters, get multiple litters around the house, preferably in areas she frequently does this. Next, reinforce good behavior with rewards when she uses a litter. This only works if you get her right as she finishes. Last discourage bad bahavior. This part is a bit more subjective and may vary depending on what you are comfortable with and what works. At very least, so no in a stern tone and immediately put her in a littler box when she does it. That way she can re associate what is correct. |
