Default Question on cat nutrition?

I have a 9 yr old female with food allergies. I'm currently feeding her California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato Formula. I've heard that a diet of fish as a primary protein is bad for cats. Is this true and why is it bad? What are the side effects of a fish protein diet?

Fish lacks significant amounts of some nutrients that are essential to cat health, most significantly the amino acid taurine. However in commercial cat foods these nutrients are added to make it nutritionally complete so the fact that it has fish as the main protein is irrelevant.

The other big issue with fish is that it can contain trace amounts of mercury, however the amount found in dry or wet cat food is usually a fraction of what you might find in regular canned fish, and herring is known as a low-mercury fish anyway.
