Sonshine's answer is perfect.
Some brands are AvoDerm Select Cuts, Wellness, Merrick's, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Authority (Petsmart brand) and a new Petco brand food but I can't remember the name. You do want to start using 1000 mg Omega 3 fish oil pills. One pill for one feeding per day. Laxatone (or any other petrolatum based substance) is okay for a short while or when used sporadically, but not good to use often as it does coat the lining of the intestines and stops nutrients from being absorbed properly. Omega 3 aids in digestion, hairball removal and shine/health of coat. |

I prefer to give my cats (all ages) NO GRAIN or low grain cat food. There is one called "BG: for Before Grain in pet stores for example.
Do NOT give him cheap food unless you want HIGH vet bills. Also older cats, actually all cats, should have very litlle amounts of DRY food. It's been linked to diabetes and kidney disease. (I've had cats my whole life and several lived to their advanced teens when these problems will manifest. Those who ate wet food were better off by FAR). Think about it...a cat's natural diet is a MOUSE which is NOT dry. Additionally, you cannot expect to feed anyone (animal or human) low quality "junk" food and not have them develop health issues. (Try eating at McD's ONLY for awhile -you'd be literally killing yourself.) Giving him fiber is good. You might want to try putting an omega fish oil capsule in his food instead of laxatone. It will benefit him in many ways additional to helping "lube" him. Laxatone can interfere with nutrient absorption and is high in sugar. With my cats, I add a capsule of a high quality probiotic like acidophilis (must be kept in refrigeration). This helps greatly aid digestion -even in the little girls who might eat some of it. They'd be less likely to develop soft stools. You can get it in any health food store, generally the stuff that works is in the refrigeration section. It's not inexpensive (around $10) but all you need is one capsule per meal, so it's really not bad and it does a WORLD of good. It is "good bacteria" that even helps in the digestion and elimination of furballs.' If your cats get along, there's no reason not to have the litter boxes side by side. If he wants his OWN, however you may have to move it. Ours are side by side and they pee in one and poo in the other. As a cat male cat gets older, it's good to get a litter box with higher sides and a low entrance so they can get in easily and when they get arthritic and can't squat so well, they don't pee over the side. PS. Please research your questions on the net. There are many good resources. I'll try to locate some for you. |

you can have as many litterboxes as you need. the cats know whose is whose (I have 3 for 5 cats). as for the food: if they are grown, they only need to be fed once a day. you can separate them out (girls in the bathroom, menfolk in the kitchen) and what noone finishes, put into the icebox til later. my vet says the canned catfood is bad for older cats--use it as a treat only--because it is high in salt and can cause kidney problems. try your old man on some fish oils for his poop problem. as for the cat food brands? friskies is good. sos nine lives. special kitty (walmart) is okay but stinks to high heaven. you might want to just go with the cheap salmon or tuna for humans also.
