I'm really worried about my cat (constipation and other symptoms)?

My male cat is suffering from constipation, and is acting very odd. Usually he greets me at the door and is all bright eyed. Now he's just laying around, sleeping and I just noticed this today. I also felt his belly and felt a hard bump there. I have another cat and he does NOT have that bump. My cat also is growling/meowing is a very odd way that it's never done before. I suspect my cat is suffering from a hairball but I'm not sure. I don't have much money for a vet (I'm a student) but I'm very worried and need answers right away. Is there anything I can do for my kitty before I take it to the vet? Is it a hairball and am I overreacting? My cat is about 4 years old. Please help!

It doesn't sound like any hairball I ever heard of. What is sounds like is he has a blockage in his lower intistine. I'd get him to the vet because if it is a blockage it is a very serious problem and can cause death.
