I'm eighteen living in a lonely apartment by myself and going to college. The apartment is rather small with three rooms. Would a cat be happy here? He would mostly be inside coped up while i'm in class 4-6 hours a day. I very frequently visit my parents and plan on taking him back and forth which is around a 30 minute drive both ways. I would just hate to get one and find out he's not happy. Any idea what breed to go with for this situation?
thanks so much, Jack |

Sounds like my situation... A cat would be fine with that lifestyle. What you need to do is go to a shelter and pick out the perfect cat.
Older: Relaxed but fearless aka good with knew situations. Friendly with new people. Kitten: Better because it will only know the space given so he wont want to live somewhere bigger. It would have to be fearless outgoing calm kitten. Worst because its hard to find a kitten that would be bouncing off the walls. I say fearless because of the travel Had a friend that took her cat everywhere including vacation. That little thing loved cars. |

What happens if you get married to an allergic spouse? what happens if you want to travel? what about no pet housing? What i am asking is will you be responsible enough to this animal for 15+ years?
If so the answer is easy. Adopt a 5 year old cat that is about to be killed from a shelter Best of luck |

any cat would do great in that setting, i would get one that is a little older than a kitten, kittens need to much interaction in their youth, but a month old cat one that hasn't been placed from the shelter because its not a kitten anymore would be perfect.
but Just like having children make it cat proof too. make sure it has an area for a litter box, cat three and a scratching post. and most important of all a good vet. a good palce for information is housecat housecalls on animal planet it has tons of information on new and experienced cat owners. it would do you well to look the site over too. |

Don't worry so much about the breed, at the moment. Just go to your local shelter, or surrounding area and look at all the beautiful kittens and cats, that are hoping to be adopted, by someone like you! You sound like you would be a caring and responsible pet owner. Give a shelter kittie a chance! Good Luck! :}
