I have a very very long haired cat who i used to get shaved at the groomers. For some unknown reason he will not tolerate it anymore. Without getting shaved a couple times a year he gets matted when he grooms himself. He has so much hair that I have a hard time keeping him combed out. Also he is not declawed which makes the task that much harder. I have called vets who want to charge me an arm and a leg to sedate him and shave him but of course I can't afford that. Help!!! What can I do???

Sorry, there are NO HUMAN MEDICATIONS over the counter that are safe for cats except baby aspirin, and that is just for arthritis pain.
There are all sorts of things on the petstore shelves that CLAIM to do certain things, but they are not studied to see if they are safe or effective. Use them at your own (and your kitty's) risk.

Do NOT use ANYTHING without the advice of a veterinarian. To do so could cause serious consequences for your cat. Save up the money or use a credit card and have the cat groomed by a professional.

Cat Sedation is tricky. I would strongly recommend seeing a vet about it. If you buy something over the internet and give to much, you could kill your cat.

Make the vet trip, get enough to cover you for a year. The vet will know how much to give you pet per it's weight and age. You could also try having someone come to your home to shave your kitty. I had a Vet Tech come to my home for $50 canadian and shaved my elderly kitty.

If your cat is shaved at home, you can give it rest periods every 15 minutes and its comfortable in its own surroundings. Also feeding it while it's getting shaved can help. Get a bag of temptations and let your cat lick the morsels as they shave.

Your best option is to buy a muzzle after getting him de-clawed and shaving him on your own. Make sure you don't cut his hair too short that will drive him crazy on its own.

If he was doing fine until now you might consider looking into if anything bad happened or if any of the employees are abusive.
