I just got an 8 week old Yorkie. I already have a 4 year old Maltese. My Maltese doesn't seem thrilled about having a new puppy around, but I'm sure she will adapt. The problem I'm having is that my Maltese is now starting to go potty in the house even though she is fully housebroken. She sees that the puppy has done and thinks it must be ok, or it could just be her acting out. She also eats the puppy's food even though they are basically eating the same thing.I try to give my older dog special attention, but the puppy also wants and needs attention. For example, I'll give my older dog a belly rub but the puppy comes around so I start rubbing her belly too. I have both arms going. I also hold and pet my adult dog to give her attention and to get a break from the puppy jumping on her. They play a little, but I can tell my older dog puts the puppy in it's place. I'm ok with that. The puppy has to learn to behave around my adult dog and who better to teach her that than the dog she is terrorizing.Has anyone ever had these type of problems? I'm most worried about the pottying in the house issue.

Yes, My 5 year old German Shepard mix started acting out when I got my Chiwiennie. At first it was subtle but then she started peeing on the bed and doing other thing like that. Then she slowly started to stop eating when she realize we were not getting rid of my puppy.
Its normal for dogs to act out like humans. When a little kid doesnt get what he want but his older brother does he acts out. Dogs are like 4 year old humans. I would just give the dog acting out lots of love and treats while the puppy is around so he will think hmm..when the pup is around I get treats and he shouldnt act up anymore! |
