Arrow changing diet question...horses?

when u change a horses diet too quickly the bacteria in the stomach cant digest it because its not used to the new diet? right? but my main question is...i read that if u feed a horse too much grain the bacteria has to multiply to digest it(why does it have to multiply?).. and thus resulting in laminitis but could this cause colic too?(if so how)
