Of course I got my lil' babies Sky and Kiwi from a local pet store. They can step up, Come to the finger from a distance, And im teaching them to shake with thier feet. Im sure the breeded ones will be more playful though, but these guys grumble and play. SO CUTE

Pretty much any bird can be taught certain things. It depends more on you, your level of knowledge and your patience. However, your Mom is definitely correct that you should buy from a reputable breeder, not from a pet store. Pet stores mostly get their birds from bird mills. I'm sure you do not want to contribute to that any more than you would want to get a puppy mill puppy and encourage that kind of cruel breeding practices. A good breeder will have a much higher quality bird, genetically speaking and will only ask about half what a pet store will charge. Please deal with a reputable breeder and stay away from the pet stores.

It depends on how old your bird is when you buy it. Older birds are harder to train. The longer they have been kept in the store the worse off you are. Yes its better to buy from a breeder, but its not impossible to train store bought. Keep trying. Start with easy things like whistling. Good Luck.

You can train pet birds bought at petstores, like Petco and PetSmart, but it will usually take longer to train them. Most breeder bought birds are hand-fed so they are already used to people. Many birds at the petstore haven't been hand-fed, so they need to be socialized. They tend to be afraid of hands at first. I've bought all of my pet birds, parakeets and finches, at petstores. I've been able to train all of my parakeets to perch on my finger, do some tricks, and most of the males to talk. Some of the parakeets didn't take too long to train, but others took many months to train, especially to talk. The birds I bought were all healthy and I never had any major problems with them. The bottom line is that you'll get a more tame, social pet bird much faster if you buy it from a breeder than a petstore. If you have the time and patience, you can buy a pet bird from the petstore.
