Marine aquarium lighting?

I have recently purchased an entire 125g marine set up. I don't know the age of the lights (t-8's i beleive) but would like to completely replace them since I got the set up extremely cheap. What are moon lights and actinics, and are they needed? I do want to get into corals with this tank down the road. Do I need the lights to go the full 72" over the top? or will 48" fixtures work? Any manufactures i should stay away from? Lights will be mounted to the inside of my canopy. Looking for any suggestions, links, or advise from personal experience. Thanks for any info you can provide!

need the full 72". marine glo from petsmart. i use perfecto hoods.

well for corals i think it doesn't depend on the lights but the Temperature of the water.

u dont really need a 72in fixture but it would look stupid with lights only over one side. u dont need moon lights or actinics but they look cool, the actinics may help the fish from stressing out at sun up and sun down though. i wouldnt buy from a petsmart or chain like that. definantly not ebay either unless ur sure ur getting a trusted brand. i would trust anything from liveaquaria.com
